Laura Rhaiannon Powe
PETAL ARTS TRAIL FEATURED ARTIST
Painting - Mixed Media

Laura’s art career spans over more than three decades and is rooted in a lifelong
love of creativity, teaching, and the expressive power of the arts. Raised by two
musical parents, she developed an early appreciation for the ways ideas,
emotions, and stories can be communicated through creative expression.
Her artistic education has carried her from the study of American Luminism in
the Mississippi Delta to Florence, Italy, where she studied landscape painting
alongside anatomy and figure drawing through an assistantship. These
experiences deepened her understanding of the human form and strengthened
her belief in the importance of observation, discipline, and continual artistic
exploration.
Following her studies in Florence, Laura began teaching art in Hattiesburg,
Mississippi. Over the years, teaching has become an integral part of her artistic
practice. As both an artist and a mother, she finds particular joy in nurturing the
creative spirit of children and encouraging them to discover the world through
their own imaginations. She is deeply interested in the ways making art can give
form to experiences that are diļ¬cult to express through words such as the
capacity for both joy and sorrow, the complexity of the human experience, and
the tension and harmony between the soul and the body. Teaching is more than
the sharing of artistic skills; it is a continuation of the conversation and
communion that exists between artists across generations.
For Laura, art is both a lifelong conversation and an invitation—to observe more
deeply, to feel more honestly, and to discover meaning through the act of creating.
